AT&T Inc. Named America's Most Admired Telecommunications Company for 2006
San Antonio, Texas, February 21, 2006

Fortune magazine has named AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) as America's Most Admired Telecommunications Company. The company, formed in November when SBC Communications acquired AT&T and adopted the AT&T name, has garnered the No. 1 spot in the telecommunications industry more than any other telecom company since the ranking was first published.

The new AT&T joins an elite group of other most admired corporate leaders in this year's annual survey, including General Electric, IBM, Berkshire Hathaway, Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble and UPS — each with top rankings in their respective industries.

"The best name in the business, once again, has the best reputation. The new AT&T is leading the way into a new era of integrated communications and entertainment services," said Edward E. Whitacre Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of AT&T Inc. "Our ranking atop the Most Admired list is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our employees. It's also a reflection of our unwavering commitment to innovation and service in meeting our customers' needs."

The Most Admired rankings, which reflect performance for 2005, list the former SBC Communications as AT&T Inc. at No. 1. The former SBC Communications Inc. adopted AT&T Inc. as its name after its acquisition of AT&T Corp. late last year. Today, AT&T is the U.S. industry leader in several key business categories:

  • No. 1 in communications services for businesses.
  • No.1 in DSL broadband, with 7 million lines in service.
  • No. 1 in wireless, through its joint ownership of Cingular, which has more than 54 million subscribers nationwide.
  • No 1. in directory publishing.

Fortune's Most Admired Companies list is one of the most highly respected registers of corporate performance and reputation in the nation.

The Fortune Most Admired Companies study surveys top executives and directors from Fortune 1000 and Global 500 companies, along with financial analysts, to identify companies that enjoy the strongest reputations within their industries and across industries. Companies are rated on attributes that include the ability to attract and retain talented people, quality of management, social responsibility, innovativeness, long-term investment value, use of corporate assets, financial soundness, and quality of products/services.
